The work depicts the author's childhood in the African society of Guinea, his family life, customs, beliefs, and growing up between traditional culture and modern education.
Through the story, the boy learns the values of work, respect for family and community, but also the challenges of being separated from home for school. The novel is written in a lyrical and warm style and provides a vivid depiction of African life, tradition, and the coming of age of a young man. It is considered an important work of African literature because it combines personal experience with a depiction of cultural identity and the colonial period.
