Glavni lik romana Pavel Straňanský ljubitelj je i strastveni proučavatelj seoskog života, nastoji ga oteti potpunom zaboravu, jednako kao što njegove djeliće uspijeva sačuvati seoska barokna arhitektura.

Pavel preživljava tako što sastavlja rodoslovna stabla za Čehe koji su odavno emigrirali u Ameriku. Njegovi klijenti uglavnom naprosto žele doznati nešto o svojem porijeklu i precima, koji su većinom potekli iz južnočeških sela, gdje i sam junak živi čitav život. Ali priča se zapleće oko jedne neobične narudžbe domaćega klijenta koji ne traži genealošku studiju, nego neko staro zametnuto pismo zbog kojeg je nekoliko zemljoposjednika u doba nasilne socijalističke kolektivizacije sela bilo razvlašteno i završilo u zatvoru.
