Poslovi G-na Langoa

Poslovi G-na Langoa

Edgar Sanday, Edgar Faure

A novel by Edgar Faure (pseud. Edgar Sanday), a crime story with elements of social satire, set in a French provincial town. The atmosphere is imbued with tension and irony, and the language flows with ease, making the work attractive and intriguing.

The main character, Mr. Langois, a respected mediator known for his good-naturedness and skill in resolving conflicts without judgment, leads a seemingly harmonious life. The narrator, a young man who comes to town and takes a job with Langois, gradually discovers that his employer hides a complex nature and secrets.

The plot becomes entangled when a series of inexplicable events occur in the city related to debts, bankruptcies and intrigues between the bourgeoisie and the nobility. Women - from the femme fatale to the naïve - play key roles, further complicating relationships. Langois, a man of volatile character, is entangled in a web of lies and manipulation, and his reputation begins to crumble. The narrator, attracted but also confused by Langois' charisma, tries to uncover the truth, which leads to an unexpected denouement that leaves room for an enigma.

Faure, known as a politician, shows literary talent here, mixing the style of Mirbeau and Simenon. The novel explores themes of hypocrisy, social facade, and moral duplicity, with a subtle critique of bourgeois society.
