Aretej

Aretej

Miroslav Krleža

"Aretej" is the first dramatic text written by Miroslav Krleža after a break of more than a quarter of a century.

In this drama, he partly returns to the style and motifs of his Legends from the beginning of his career, but also deals with motifs that were influenced by his experiences from the time before and during the Second World War. A historical allegory with elements of fantasy in which the life of the ancient Greek physician Aretaeus under Roman rule during the crisis of the 3rd century intertwines with his stateless colleagues. These stateless people, fleeing from fascist systems, ended up in front of Arete's ruins as tourists in 1938.
