Varljivo osjećanje

Varljivo osjećanje

Amis Kingsley

The book depicts a world in which the Protestant Reformation never succeeded, and Europe remains under the strict control of the Roman Catholic Church.

The main character is Hubert Anvil, a talented boy soprano whose voice amazes the church authorities. Because of the beauty of his voice, the church plans to castrate him so that he can retain his soprano and become a symbol of divine purity through music. Hubert and his family face a difficult moral dilemma: to follow personal desires and the integrity of the body or to submit to the will of the church and ensure the boy's status and security. Hubert gradually becomes aware of the manipulation, control and restrictions in the world ruled by the church. This social criticism is expressed through the details of everyday life, censorship, cultural repression and strict rules about sexuality and individuality. Throughout the novel, Hubert develops a sense of inner resistance, but circumstances increasingly squeeze him. The novel ends in a tragically ironic way, which forces the reader to reflect on the price of obedience, the loss of freedom and identity.
