Dante Alighieri

Inferno is an epic poem that belongs to Dante's greatest work, the Divine Comedy. He began writing it around 1307 and finished it shortly before his death in 1321.

This is the most famous part of his trilogy precisely because it talks about the punishments that a person receives after a life of sin. Dante's vision of Hell was later used throughout literature and art. It was even adopted by the Church, given its detailed and logical presentation.
