John Galsworthy

The Owner (1906) is the first part of the Forsyte Saga. The novel satirically and critically portrays Soames Forsyte in particular - a property owner and his wife Irene - whose possessiveness and materialism destroy human relationships and lead to family

John Galsworthy published the novel The Man of Property in 1906, which later became the basis for his most famous work The Forsyte Saga. The Croatian translation by Josip Horvat was published in 1941 by Ante Velzek in Zagreb under the title The Owner.

The novel is a powerful social satire of the English upper middle class from the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras. It centers on Soames Forsyte, a successful lawyer and real estate owner, who sees his wife Irene as property, just like the houses and paintings he collects. Irene, beautiful, sensitive and artistically inclined, suffocates in a loveless marriage and falls in love with the young architect Bosinney. The conflict between Soames' possessiveness and Irene's desire for freedom forms the core of the novel and leads to a dramatic tragedy.

Galsworthy masterfully portrays the entire Forsyte family – wealthy, practical, conservative and deeply materialistic people for whom property is the highest value. The novel criticizes the English bourgeoisie, its class egoism, hypocrisy and lack of true emotions. However, the author also shows understanding for their weaknesses, so the work is not only a satire but also a deep psychological study.

The Owner is the first part of a great saga that follows the Forsyte family through several generations. The style is realistic, precise and elegant, with excellent dialogues and subtle irony. Velzek's 1941 edition (in two volumes) is considered the classic Croatian translation of this work. Today, The Owner is considered one of the most important works of English literature of the 20th century and remains a powerful criticism of materialism and possessiveness.
