Pero i Pava

Paula Preradović

A historical novel about the great love of Croatian poet Petar Preradović and his first wife Pavica (Pava) from a Dalmatian noble family. A touching story of love, marriage, war and tragic fate in the turbulent 19th century.

This is the most famous novel by Paula Preradović (1887–1951), granddaughter of the famous Croatian poet Petar Preradović. Written in German in 1940, the novel was soon translated into Croatian and became very popular.

The work is a romantic-historical biography that, with a lot of warmth, nostalgia and lyricism, depicts the life and love story of Petar Preradović (Pero) and his first wife Pavica (Pava) from the distinguished Dalmatian de Ponte family. The plot follows their meeting, passionate love, marriage, everyday life in the military garrisons of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and the difficult moments of illness and the premature death of young Pavica.

Paula Preradović wrote the novel based on family letters, documents and traditions, so the work has both autobiographical and documentary value. In addition to the love story, the novel faithfully depicts the atmosphere of the 19th century – the Illyrian movement, military life, social conditions in Dalmatia and Slavonia, and the national awakening of the Croats within the Habsburg Monarchy.

The style is romantic, emotional, and nostalgic, with rich descriptions of nature and deep psychological portraits of the characters. The book is at the same time a family chronicle, a love novel, and a subtle ode to Croatian cultural heritage.

Pero i Pava is considered one of the most successful Croatian historical novels of the 20th century and an important part of the Preradović family mythology. Today, it is appreciated as a beautiful and moving read that combines history, love, and literature.
