Roman jedne žene

Marika Stjernstedt

A Woman's Novel is a psychological novel about the life, loves, marriage, and inner struggle of a sensitive and intelligent woman in Swedish bourgeois society at the beginning of the 20th century.

Marika Stjernstedt (1879–1954) was a prominent Swedish writer, known for her modern, psychologically penetrating novels with an emphasis on women's fate. A Woman's Novel is one of her most famous works and a classic example of Scandinavian literature of the first half of the 20th century.

The plot follows the life of the main character from youth to adulthood – her first love, marriage, motherhood, disappointments and the inner struggle for personal freedom and meaning. Stjernstedt depicts with great sensitivity and realism the emotional world of a woman in bourgeois society, the conflict between romantic ideals and social restrictions, and the desire for independence at a time when this was still very difficult for women.

The novel is characterized by fine psychological analysis, a subtle depiction of interpersonal relationships and a modern view of marriage and female sexuality. For its time, it was quite open and free, which attracted female readers, but also caused controversy.

The Croatian edition was published by the Croatian Literary Society of St. Jerome (Catholic publisher), which is interesting because Stjernstedt was a Protestant who later converted to Catholicism. Today, A Woman's Novel is regarded as an important work of Scandinavian literature and as a good example of an early feminist novel dealing with the inner life of a modern woman.
