Pedagogija I. dio: Uzgojoslovje

Stjepan Basariček

Pedagogy Part I: Education by Stjepan Basariček is the first systematic Croatian textbook on pedagogy. The work deals with the theory of education and lays the foundations for modern Croatian pedagogical science.

Pedagogy. Part I: Horticulture by the Croatian pedagogue and school reformer Stjepan Basariček is one of the first systematic Croatian pedagogy textbooks and is considered a fundamental work in the development of Croatian pedagogical thought during the second half of the 19th century. It is primarily intended for teachers, teacher trainees and teachers' school students, but also for everyone who has dealt with issues of upbringing and education.

In the first part, entitled Education, Basariček deals with the theoretical foundations of education. It considers the purpose and tasks of education, the development of children's personality, the role of family and school, and moral, intellectual and physical education. The author starts from contemporary European pedagogical currents, especially the ideas of Johann Friedrich Herbart and his followers, trying to adapt them to Croatian social and school conditions. He pays special attention to the formation of character, the development of moral values and the teacher's responsibility in the educational process.

The work was created in the period of modernization of Croatian education after the adoption of school reforms in the seventies of the 19th century. In this context, Basariček tried to create domestic professional literature in the Croatian language and develop Croatian pedagogical nomenclature. Due to the clarity of presentation and systematic content, the book has served as one of the most important pedagogical manuals in Croatian teacher training schools for decades.

Pedagogy is not only a textbook but also a valuable document of the development of Croatian educational policy and pedagogical science. With it, Basariček laid the foundations of professional teacher education and significantly contributed to the professionalization of the teaching profession in Croatia.
