Smrt Smail-age Čengića

Smrt Smail-age Čengića

Ivan Mažuranić

A masterpiece of Croatian Romanticism, the epic poem by Ivan Mažuranić depicts the conflict between the Ottoman tyrant Smail-aga and Montenegrin heroes, celebrating the struggle for freedom, justice, and human dignity.

The epic poem "The Death of Smail-aga Čengić," published in 1846, is a masterpiece of Croatian literature and the most significant achievement of Croatian Romanticism, authored by Ivan Mažuranić. Inspired by an actual historical event—the death of the Herzegovinian pasha Smail-aga Čengić during a conflict with the Montenegrins in 1840—Mažuranić crafted a universal artistic vision of an oppressed people’s struggle against tyranny and evil. The poem consists of five cantos: "Agovanje" (The Reign of the Aga), "Noćnik" (The Night Traveler), "Četa" (The Detachment), "Harač" (The Tribute), and "Kob" (The Fateful End). Through the unfolding action, the author contrasts the brutality, arrogance, and cruelty of Smail-aga with the courage, spiritual strength, and unwavering resistance of the Montenegrin heroes and the common folk. The canto "Harač" is particularly notable for its depiction of the agony of an abused populace, while the final canto, "Kob," portrays the symbolic downfall of the tyrant, whose arrogance culminates in total defeat and oblivion. Written in rich, melodious language that weaves together elements of folk epic poetry (the decasyllabic verse) and the classical poetic tradition, the work is distinguished by its exceptional dramatic intensity and vivid imagery. "The Death of Smail-aga Čengić" transcends its specific historical context, standing as an enduring monument to the struggle for freedom, justice, and the triumph of good over violence.
