Izabrana poezija
Selected poems by two major Serbian Romantics unite youthful exuberance, love and intimations of death with family happiness, grief, satire and reflections on transience.
Izabrana poezija brings together Branko Radičević and Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, two distinctive voices of Serbian Romanticism. Love, youth, nature and transience are shared concerns, expressed through contrasting rhythms and emotional registers. Essays by Isidora Sekulić, Branko Radičević lirik, and Božidar Pejović, Zmaj na raskršću vremena i poezije, introduce the selections.
Radičević’s section includes Devojka na studencu, Putnik na uranku, Vragolije, Tuga i opomena and Kad mlidijah umreti, alongside excerpts from Đački rastanak and other works. Playfulness, spontaneity and musical verse alternate with elegiac passages, a sense of loss and the anticipation of an early death.
The Zmaj selection encompasses love poetry, reflective verse, social criticism and satire, with poems from Đulići and Đulići uveoci. The contrast between domestic happiness and bereavement reveals the emotional range of his intimate poetry, while Jututunska narodna himna represents his critical engagement with authority and society.
The volume invites a comparative reading of two important nineteenth-century poets, setting Radičević’s youthful sensibility beside Zmaj’s varied lyric voice, where private feeling meets public expression.
