Ivan Cankar

"In the Gorge" is a novella written by Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar, one of the author's most famous works. It was published in 1900 and is one of the key works of Slovenian modern literature.

The novella is set in an idyllic but poor mountain village, where Cankar depicts the lives of ordinary people and their daily struggles. The story focuses on characters who live in deep poverty and struggle with difficult living conditions, and the plot is based on their mutual relationships, aspirations and conflicts. In this work, Cankar excellently depicted psychological portraits of the characters, especially the main protagonists, and through them spoke about themes such as human suffering, injustice, but also hope. "In the Gorge" offers a deep analysis of the life and fate of an individual, and in doing so, Cankar masterfully uses social criticism, which refers to social inequality and moral dilemmas. The novel deals with themes of love, patriarchal relations, poverty and the struggle for a better life. In this work, Cankar relies on realism and symbolism, using nature and the environment as reflections of the inner states of his characters, which makes this work deeply emotional and philosophical.
