This seminal work by Dragutin Rosandić, published in 1970, marks a turning point in the shaping of the so-called "Zagreb School of Methodology." The book systematically analyzes the goals, objectives, and methods of teaching language, expression, and literature in primary and secondary schools. The author moves away from the traditional lecture-based approach and advocates for a communicative-creative teaching model that places the student at the center of the educational process. In the section dedicated to language and expression, Rosandić emphasizes the importance of developing linguistic culture and literacy, as well as the functional acquisition of grammar and orthography through practical exercises. Regarding the methodology of teaching literature, he focuses on an experiential-cognitive interpretation of literary works, encouraging independent reading, aesthetic judgment, and critical thinking among students. Special attention is also given to the integration of modern media—such as radio, television, and film—into the teaching process, thereby anticipating contemporary media-based methodological systems. Although its title reflects the official name of the subject at the time, the book’s scholarly and practical scope has ensured its status as an enduring foundation for the modern methodology of teaching the Croatian language.
