Eugen Werber

Eugen Werber, otherwise an actor and translator, was the best connoisseur of Judaism in the former Yugoslavia. He was born in 1923 in Subotica, educated in Novi Sad. He translated from Hebrew and Yiddish, collaborated in encyclopedic editions on the subject of Judaism, and in the editions of the Union of Jewish Municipalities of Yugoslavia he often appeared with works in the field of Hebrew literature and history.

Although he was known to the general public primarily as an actor, he also became famous for his translations of the Talmud, the Kabbalah, the Qumran manuscripts and other works of Jewish and biblical literature. He began his acting career at the Vojvodina National Theatre, and at the same time worked as a journalist in Subotica's "Hrvatska Rijeka" and a Hungarian newspaper.

We remember him as Hans Šmit from "Written Out", Matković from the series about the truck drivers Paja and Jaret, but also as a colleague of Veselin Cvetković in the cult film "Deceptive Summer '68". His roles in the films Operation Belgrade, Walter defends Sarajevo, Salaš u malo rit, Wintering in Jakobsfeld, Body Breath, Bikers... were also noted.
