The story begins when a young man named Jean Martain arrives in Paris from America and asks Maigret for help in finding his father, a famous impresario. Martain believes that his father is in danger and that he is being threatened by a mysterious threat. Although he is hesitant at first, Maigret decides to help and soon finds himself on his way to New York.

In an unfamiliar environment, faced with a different culture and American way of life, Maigret must use his intuition and wisdom to find clues. He uncovers the dark background of the impresario's business world, intrigues and conspiracies, and people who are ready to do anything for success and money. Despite all the obstacles, Maigret remains faithful to his distinctive, methodical style of work, observing human traits and psychological aspects of the characters in order to uncover the truth.

The novel is characterized by Simenon's distinctive style - an atmospheric and realistic story, characters that are lifelike and convincing, and a masterful description of city life. Through tension and suspense, the author skilfully portrays the culture shock of the main character, making this adventure special in the series of cases of the famous inspector.
