„Gefährliche Liebschaften“ ist ein 1782 veröffentlichter Briefroman, der anhand einer Reihe von Briefen die Heuchelei und Manipulation der französischen Adelsgesellschaft am Vorabend der Französischen Revolution aufzeigt.
Die Hauptfiguren, die Marquise de Merteuil und der Vicomte de Valmont, schmieden Pläne, um ihre persönlichen Ziele zu erreichen – Rache, Verführung und Macht.
Die Marquise de Merteuil will den Verrat ihres ehemaligen Liebhabers rächen, indem sie Valmont überredet, die junge und unschuldige Cécile de Volanges zu verführen, die gerade aus dem Kloster zurückgekehrt ist und sich auf ihre Hochzeit vorbereitet. Gleichzeitig möchte Valmont die tugendhafte und fromme Madame de Tourvel für sich gewinnen, eine Herausforderung, die ihm zusätzliche Motivation verleiht.
Durch ein Netz aus Intrigen gelingt es Valmont, Madame de Tourvel zu verführen, doch entgegen seiner Erwartungen verliebt er sich in sie. Gleichzeitig gerät Cécile, manipuliert und emotional zerstört, in eine tragische Situation. Als die Marquise de Merteuil und Valmont ihr Bündnis brechen, beginnt ihr offener Kampf, der mit Valmonts Tod in einem Duell und dem gesellschaftlichen Niedergang der Marquise endet.
Der Roman deckt die Korruption der Elite und die Heuchelei in Fragen der Moral und Liebe schonungslos auf und nutzt die innovative Form der Briefe, um die psychologische Tiefe der Charaktere darzustellen. Es gilt als einer der Höhepunkte der französischen Literatur des 18. Jahrhunderts.
