Opasne veze su epistolarni roman objavljen 1782. godine, koji kroz niz pisama prikazuje licemjerje i manipulaciju francuskog aristokratskog društva uoči Francuske revolucije.
Glavni likovi, markiza de Merteuil i vikont de Valmont, spletkare kako bi ostvarili svoje osobne ciljeve – osvete, zavodljivosti i moći.
Markiza de Merteuil želi osvetiti prevaru bivšeg ljubavnika tako što nagovara Valmonta da zavede mladu i nevinu Cécile de Volanges, koja se upravo vratila iz samostana i priprema za brak. Istodobno, Valmont želi osvojiti kreposnu i pobožnu madame de Tourvel, izazov koji mu pruža dodatnu motivaciju.
Kroz splet spletki, Valmont uspijeva zavesti madame de Tourvel, ali protivno svojim očekivanjima, zaljubljuje se u nju. Istovremeno, Cécile, izmanipulirana i emocionalno uništena, završava u tragičnoj situaciji. Kad markiza de Merteuil i Valmont međusobno prekidaju savez, započinje njihova otvorena borba koja završava Valmontovom smrću u dvoboju i društvenim padom markize.
Roman brutalno razotkriva pokvarenost elite, licemjerje oko pitanja morala i ljubavi te koristi inovativnu formu pisama kako bi oslikavao psihološku dubinu likova. Smatra se jednim od vrhunaca francuske književnosti 18. stoljeća.
