Dunda i druge novele

Dunda i druge novele

Guy de Maupassant

The story is set during the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), and begins with the escape of French citizens from Rouen, under Prussian occupation. Among them is Elizabeth Rousset, "Dunda", a girl of easy morals but a kind heart.

The group consists of members of different social classes – wealthy merchants, aristocrats and nuns – all of whom deeply hypocritically condemn Dunda for her profession. However, when a Prussian officer stops their journey and conditions their passage on the condition that Dunda spends the night with him, the situation changes. At first, everyone rejects the idea, supporting Dunda's refusal, but over time, under pressure and manipulation, they gradually persuade her to give in – all in order to ensure the continuation of the journey for themselves.

Dunda eventually agrees to sacrifice herself for the good of everyone, but after fulfilling what they asked of her, her fellow travelers again despise and ignore her. The story ends with the scene of a humiliated and broken Dunda crying quietly, while the other travelers coldly reject her.

In "Dunda", Maupassant sharply criticizes human hypocrisy, social prejudice and selfishness, creating a powerful portrait of a morally superior individual who falls victim to social hypocrisy. The story is one of his most famous and important works, recognized for its realistic power and psychological depth.
