Spomenica braće Radić: Stjepan Radić

Franjo Gaži

A historical-journalistic work that, in a documentary but also emotional manner, provides an overview of the life, political activities and ideological legacy of the founder of the Croatian People's Peasant Party and one of the most important politicians

The author Franjo Gaži, Radić's collaborator and political successor, writes from personal experience and deep respect for the leader of the peasant movement, but also for his brother Antun Radić, a prominent ethnographer and cultural worker.

The book is designed as a memorial, a kind of collection of memories, documents, speeches, political comments and anecdotes that testify to the character, struggle and ideas of Stjepan Radić. Special emphasis is placed on his struggle for Croatian autonomy within the Yugoslav state, his advocacy for peace, justice and the rights of the peasantry, as well as his tragic death in 1928 in the National Assembly in Belgrade, which resonated strongly with the Croatian and Yugoslav public.

Gaži presents Radić's political path - from his education abroad, through the formation of the HPSS, to his maturation as a people's tribune. The spirit of patriotism, democracy and popular enlightenment, which were the foundation of Radić's politics, permeates the book. The work also has educational value, as it brings the reader closer to the time of great political turmoil between the two world wars.

"Spomenica" is written with deep empathy, but also political clarity, and remains a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Croatian national and peasant movement, as well as the personality of one of its strongest representatives - Stjepan Radić.
