Trideset novela

Luigi Pirandello

A collection of selected short prose by the Italian Nobel Prize winner exposes the absurdity of everyday life. Through the fates of little people, Pirandello explores alienation, repressed passions, and the gap between mask and reality.

Thirty Novels is an anthological selection from the extensive narrative opus of the Italian playwright and Nobel Prize winner Luigi Pirandello, derived from his monumental cycle Novels for a Year (Novelle per un anno). In these short stories, the author brings a striking cross-section of Italian society at the beginning of the 20th century — from the impoverished Sicilian countryside and the hardships of the peasantry to the stuffy bourgeois salons and bureaucratic offices.

Pirandello's interest is centered on "small", marginalized individuals caught in absurd, tragicomic and grotesque life situations. With deep psychological insight and recognizable humor, the author shatters illusions about a stable human identity. His characters are trapped in social roles ("masks") imposed on them by their environment, while internal dramas, loneliness, madness and a repressed longing for freedom unfold beneath the surface.

Through concise and dynamic plots, imbued with subtle irony and bitter compassion, Pirandello problematizes the relativity of truth and the impossibility of true communication between people. This collection represents the pinnacle of modern European short fiction and provides a perfect insight into the thematic and philosophical preoccupations that have made his best dramatic works famous.
