Katarina de Medici

Ivo Luzzati

The novel "Katarina de Medici" is one of the most important works of Ivo Luzzati, a Croatian writer, publicist and historian. Luzzatti was known for covering significant historical figures and events in his books.

The novel "Catherine de' Medici" deals with the life and reign of Catherine de' Medici, an Italian princess who became queen of France as the wife of Henry II and later became regent for her son Charles IX. Catherine is a historical figure known for her political skill, manipulation and influence on French politics during the tragic times of religious wars between Catholics and Protestants in France.

In this novel, Luzzatti describes in detail the life and character of Catherine, her ambitions, ability to survive in a cruel political environment, as well as her controversial actions, such as her alleged participation in the strife (shooting of Protestants) in Paris during the 16th century. The novel explores her psychological portrait, her inner dilemmas, politics and the way she navigated the intrigues of the French court and religious unrest.

Luzzatti portrays Catherine as a woman who, although she comes from a noble Italian family, managed to position herself as a powerful and influential person at the French court. Her life story illuminates the social norms of the time, especially in the context of power, love and the struggle for survival.

The novel "Catharine de Medici" is a work that deals with historical themes, but through the personal perspective of the queen, illuminating her traits, motives and strategies with which she maintained herself on the throne and secured power for her descendants, even at the cost of bloody conflicts and political intrigues.
