Glavom o zid

Zvonimir Mikulić-Đono

Zvonimir Mikulić's novel is dedicated to the young people who distinguished good from evil in the chaos of the Homeland War, often sacrificing their lives. The work seeks to preserve from oblivion their great sacrifice and the small world that was im

Set in the war-torn 1990s, the novel follows the fates of ordinary people faced with the horrors of war, interweaving their personal stories with collective trauma. Mikulić, born in 1961 in Mostar, uses a realistic style with local speech, marked by Herzegovinian expressions and dialect, to evoke the authenticity of the characters and the setting.

The main characters, often inspired by real people, go through moral dilemmas, losses and moments of courage. The action takes place in Herzegovina, with an emphasis on Ljubuški, where everyday life is intertwined with war events. The novel explores themes of sacrifice, memory and identity, warning about the importance of collective memory in order to avoid “disappearance into nothingness”. Mikulić’s language is vivid, with humor and irony, and the dialogues reflect the spirit of the local community. The work is also a homage to the sacredness of human resistance and suffering, emphasizing that “the sacred must never become passé”.

The novel is part of Mikulić's oeuvre, along with Behind the Door (2014) and The King's Corner (2017), and reflects his engagement in preserving Herzegovinian heritage.
