Mutivoda je roman iz Balzacovog velikog ciklusa "Ljudska komedija" (La Comédie humaine). Radnja se odvija u malom provincijskom gradu Arcis-sur-Aube, gdje izbore za parlamentarnog zastupnika izaziva dolazak tajanstvenog kandidata.

Glavni lik, mladi odvjetnik Charles Dorlange, predstavlja "novu krv" u političkom životu, nasuprot starim, korumpiranim elitama koje žele zadržati vlast. Njegov glavni protivnik, Maxime de Trailles, spletkari u pozadini kako bi progurao nepoznatog kandidata sumnjiva podrijetla. Kako bi se Dorlange uspio suprotstaviti intrigama, mora pokazati moralnu snagu, političku mudrost i osobnu čestitost.

Balzac u "Mutivodi" prikazuje kako politički uspjeh u Francuskoj ne ovisi samo o sposobnostima i zaslugama, već i o spletkama, vezama i manipulacijama. Roman iznosi oštru kritiku političkog oportunizma i pokvarenosti, dok istovremeno razvija i intimne priče o ljubavi, časti i osobnim ambicijama.

Iako "Mutivoda" ostaje nedovršen zbog Balzacove smrti, njegova kompleksna analiza provincijskog političkog života i unutarnjih borbi pojedinaca savršeno odražava duh "Ljudske komedije" i daje vrijedan uvid u dinamiku moći, licemjerje i moralne dileme tadašnjeg društva.
