Pan

Miroslav Krleža

"Pan" by Miroslav Krleža is the author's first book, a mythical-pantheistic poem published in 1917. Through a lush rhythm and sensual images, it conveys an ecstatic experience of nature and life. Fifth edition, first post-war.

The poem "Pan" represents one of the most significant achievements of the early period and expressionist expression of the great Croatian writer Miroslav Krleža. Originally published in 1917 in his own publishing house with the visual equipment of Ljubo Babić, this unusual lyrical creation achieved enormous literary success and later became the backbone of the famous cycle "Symphonies" (1933).

Inspired by Greek mythology, the motif of the god Pan as the personification of primordial nature, and vitalistic and pantheistic ideas, Krleža develops a lush verbal fireworks in this work. The text abounds in powerful, ecstatic images, is charged with a specific rhythm and brings an intense, almost physical experience of existence, the earth and the cosmos. Due to its violent energy and free rhythm, "Pan" has permanently marked the beginnings of Croatian literary modernity.

The edition on offer from 1947 (Nakladni zavod Hrvatske) represents the fifth overall, but also the first post-war edition of this anthological text, thus confirming its timeless value and permanent place in the history of domestic poetry.
