Od zore do mraka

Fran Mažuranić

The collection represents the author's return to literature after almost four decades of silence. It consists of short prose texts - sketches - that are more plot-rich and reflective than his earlier collection, Leaves from 1887.

The stories from this collection reflect Mažuranić's rich life experience, are imbued with introspective reflections and moral maxims, and are written with a refined sense of language.

Thematically, the sketches cover a wide range of motifs: from memories of childhood and hometown, through portraits of "ordinary" people, to philosophical reflections on life and death. Some texts have an autobiographical character, while others reflect the author's empathy for human suffering and transience.

Stylistically, Mažuranić relies on concise and gnomic expression, with a pronounced lyrical note. The influence of Turgenev and Baudelaire is noticeable, which is reflected in the atmosphere and depth of reflection. Despite the simplicity of form, the texts are rich in meaning and encourage the reader to introspect.

From Dawn to Dusk represents a significant contribution to Croatian literature, combining traditional literary forms with modernist sensibilities. The collection is a testament to the author's maturity and ability to express complex human emotions and thoughts through a short prose form.
