Društvo hrvatskih književnika- leksikon

Tihomil Maštrović, Krešimir Nemec, Slobodan Novak, Zdravko Zima

At a time when Croatian writers abroad were often presented only as "Yugoslav", this lexicon clearly and systematically presented Croatian literature as a separate national literature for the first time after World War II.

The book Lexicon The Bridge is not a classic lexicon in the modern sense, but a special bilingual (Croatian-English) edition published in 1991 by the Croatian Writers' Association with the aim of presenting Croatian literature and culture to the world public in English at the time of the breakup of Yugoslavia and the beginning of the Homeland War. The book was published in the summer of 1991, at a time when Croatia was already under armed attack, and the international public still did not clearly understand what was happening. Therefore, "The Bridge" was actually a cultural and political act - an attempt to "bridge" Croatian literature over the Iron Curtain and Yugoslav censorship directly to the English-speaking world.
