Die Teufel kommen ist einer der einprägsamsten Romane von Miodrag Bulatović. Erschienen in den frühen 1950er Jahren, etablierte er den Autor als eine außergewöhnlich originelle Stimme der modernen serbischen und montenegrinischen Literatur. Der Roman ist ein allegorisches, groteskes und psychologisch komplexes Werk, in dem Realität und Phantasmagorie beständig ineinanderfließen und die Atmosphäre einer halluzinatorischen, beinahe apokalyptischen Welt erschaffen.

Die Handlung spielt in einem von Krieg und Armut verwüsteten Balkandorf, wo am Vorabend großer historischer und spiritueller Umbrüche „Teufel“ erscheinen – nicht als übernatürliche Wesen, sondern als Symbole menschlicher Verderbtheit, Angst und Wahnsinn. Anhand einer Reihe von Figuren, die den Bezug zur Vernunft verlieren, zeigt Bulatović, wie moralische Grenzen in Zeiten des Bösen verschwimmen und wie jeder Mensch seinen Anteil an Dunkelheit in sich trägt.

Der Stil des Romans ist geprägt von poetischer Spannung, expressionistischen Bildern, kühnen Metaphern und schwarzem Humor. Bulatovićs Sprache pulsiert zwischen visionärer Lyrik und brutalem Realismus und schafft so eine einzigartige künstlerische Mischung, die den Leser gleichermaßen verstört und fesselt.
