Luna i smrt

Luna i smrt

Federico García Lorca

Lorca is a symbol of the Andalusian soul – a mixture of passion, myth and tragic predestination. Luna i smrt is a Croatian anthology dedicated to the centenary of his birth, edited and translated by Jordan Jelić (illustrated with drawings by Lorca and Jel

The anthology brings romances and ballads, like those from Romancero gitana, where the moon rules the nocturnal world: milky, silver, purple, it intensifies passion, soothes pain and symbolizes the feminine mystery, opposed to sunny, masculine Andalusia. Death, Lorca's "companion", is present in every stanza – a premonition, a prelude, an inevitable fate that felled him at the age of 38, transforming him into an eternal symbol. Poems like "The Sun Has Set", "The Orange and the Lemon" and "He Died at Dawn" evoke the depth of feelings, from erotic love to fatalism.

Lorca, like a river capricious and deep, summarizes centuries of passion: from spikenard and olives to the black horse of death. Jelić's introduction and translations emphasize Lorca's faith in freedom as a divine inspiration, making the anthology a bridge between tradition and modernity.

The themes – erotic love, incestuous suffering, fatalism – reflect Lorca's homosexual identity and anti-fascist resistance, ending with a tragic shooting in 1936. The book is ideal for getting to know Lorca: sensual, mythical, indispensable.
