Japanska poezija

Japanska poezija

Japanese poetry brings a selection of haiku and classical lyric poems that, through brevity, silence, nature, and transience, capture the essence of Japanese aesthetic and spiritual experience.

The collection Japanese Poetry translated by Božo Kukolja is an anthology of traditional Japanese lyrics, mostly haiku and short meditative poems written in the periods from Heian to Edo. Kukolja seeks to convey the simplicity, precision and tranquility of the Japanese poetic form, in which a few words are transformed into a powerful image of nature or an inner state. At the center are the motifs of the seasons, rain, cherry blossoms, the solitude of travelers, moments of silence and unobtrusive spirituality. The collection emphasizes Japanese aesthetic principles – wabi, sabi and mono no aware – a sense of the beauty of the modest, old and transient. This selection provides insight into poetry that celebrates the fragility of the moment and the harmony of man with nature, offering the Croatian reader a rare and valuable encounter with the core tradition of Japanese literature.

The intense saturation and density of this poetry make it impossible to read this book in one sitting. It must be taken slowly and measuredly, as each poem requires a longer process of reception.

The title poem, "The Black Rabbit," represents a kind of symbolist maneuver within "real" poetry, because like Baudelaire's "Albatross," it possesses a pronounced unambiguous charge.
