Dobriša Cesarić

The book of translations by Dobriša Cesarić is a collection of masterful translations of poetry by foreign authors into Croatian. The collection includes translations by Pushkin, Lermontov, Yesenin, Goethe, Heine, Rilke and others.

The Book of Translations by Dobriša Cesarić is a significant collection of poetic translations (translations) by one of the greatest Croatian lyricists of the 20th century. Cesarić (1902–1980), known for his simple, melodious and introspective lyrics, also demonstrates the mastery of a translator here, transferring the spirit and rhythm of the original into the Croatian language with exceptional sensitivity and technical precision.

The content includes translations from Russian and German poetry: Alexander Pushkin, Sergey Yesenin, Mikhail Lermontov, Ivan Krylov, Maxim Gorky, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich Heine and Rainer Maria Rilke. Cesarić selected key poems by romantics, symbolists and realists, successfully conveying their motifs — from love, nature and longing to existential questions and social satire.

This collection comes in the same year as Cesarić's original collection Poems, which shows his fruitfulness during that period. As a translator, Cesarić stands out for his ability to preserve the melodiousness and emotional depth of the original, often adapting the rhythm to the Croatian language without losing poetic power. His translations of Goethe and Heine are considered classics in Croatian literature, and Russian poets (especially Yesenin and Pushkin) acquire the warmth and immediacy typical of Cesarić's style.

The Book of Translations is not only an anthology of foreign authors but also an important contribution to Croatian culture, because with his translations Cesarić brought world classics closer to a wider audience at a time when such bridges between cultures were especially precious. Today, the book is valued among collectors and poetry lovers, and its copies often bear the author's signature.
